Winding down the Miditzer?

The reason bobinmissouri's ZIP files are large is that they include both MIDI and MP3 files. The MP3 files are large. I have taken bobinmissouri's ZIP files and created ZIP files with only the MIDI files. These are much smaller. I am going to post these in sticky topics in the MIDI file areas.

If I manage to find a place to archive this Forum, there is a good chance that the large files will have to be removed. Right now there are over 1Gb of files attached to this Forum. Much of that space is consumed by large files with little on-going interest. I'll try to be surgical if I have to remove large files. But there is a chance that either now or sometime in the future, large files will get thrown out. So I am posting the MIDI only ZIPs to improve the chances of survival for these files.

I now have all of the Miditzer midis. I immediately deleted all the mp3 files as they are of no interest to anyone apart from their author. As expected the total file size has dramatically reduced.

The beginnings of the Miditzer midi archive is already in place on my website. However it will take a while before I add all of the files as I will have to enjoy listening to every one to see whether it merits inclusion. I have already listened to most of the files in the past so I know that the standard is high.

It is also clear that the 216 is by far the most popular and well used organ.

Thank you bobinmissouri for your help, especially in preserving the lost files.
Thank you Jim for producing the Miditzers and for running a very interesting and useful forum.

Hello: Responding to the comment that there are .mpg files included along with the .mid files in the .zip files. Some users of the Miditzer chose not to put their .mid file in their posting, but were proud of their rendition of the songs so they wanted other players to hear. So they posted the .mpg file to the forum collections. Some folks may want to hear how other Miditzer players play music on their Miditzers. I enjoy listening to other renditions of the various songs by different players for my personal pleasure. I realize that .mpg files take up more megabites of memory, but to me it is worth it.

I did not mean to suggest that there is no value in the MP3 files. Only that large files can be a target when space becomes an issue. A small ZIP of only MIDI files is likely to have a longer life than a larger ZIP file that includes MP3s.

If the mp3 producers had made a midi recording of their efforts then not only would they have made more efficient use of website space but everyone would have been able to play their renditions at higher quality on their own miditzers.

Even though an mp3 renditions may sound OK on low quality domestic players, there is always an audible loss of sound quality compared to a midi rendition.

Also an mp3 file is fixed, it cannot be edited or played on a different, perhaps better, organ. Thus these files have very little value for preserving.

A career change has cut into the time I devote to virtual organs but I feel fortunate to have found the Miditzer early on. Thanks to Jim and all who have contributed to the project over the years.

Sadly archive.org doesn’t appear to have mirrored the site (although I didn’t do an exhaustive search).

If I can help preserve any part of it please let me know.

Thanks to the recent registrations of the Miditzer 260SP that were stuck in limbo due to a broken email link, I will be able to renew the registration of miditzer.org for another year. So nothing is going to disappear abruptly.

It's a shame but sadly miditzer just does not work to its full potential, work on the new system which would have eliminated the terrible latency problem never happened. My beautiful console housing the miditzer has been dismantled permanently now as it was just not playable. The sound of the miditzer outdid any other vto in my opinion and could have been something truly amazing.
