The new PC has been a long time in the coming - my old work laptop has done well but it is a bit long in the tooth now. The new PC does not come with any OS so I was going to install my own copy of XP SP3. If that does not work out I may have to buy a copy of Windows7. Anyway I am looking forward to seeing how things pan out next week. I will let you know.

Your copy of Windows XP SP3 will work fine on your new hardware, however it will take quite some time and a lot of your internet downlaod quota to let it do all the Windows updates.

I suspect your copy of Windows XP SP3 will be 32 bit. This will mean that regardless of how much actual RAM you have in the new hardware, the operating system will only be able to use ~3GB. This is a limitation of the 32 bit operating system.

To use the 8GB of RAM you have ordered in your new hardware you have no option but to install a 64 bit operating system. You could use a flavour of Linux for free, or purchase a copy of Windows 7 which will let you select to install as 32 bit or 64 bit.

If you do go down the 64 bit path, you will need to find new driver install files for all the devices you connect to your computer, MIDI to USB cable, printer, camera, scanner, soundcard, phone, TV/Video input, etc....

Many Miditzer users running Windows 7 find much higher latency than they had with Windows XP due to the way the audio output from Miditzer is handled in Windows 7.

Thanks for all the information. It's a bit of a rock and a hard place situation it seems.
I guess I will have to stay with XP for the time being but I look forward to be able to exploit the full capacity of the new PC at a later date.

BTW: Puppy turned out to be so easy to handle, that I forgot all my mental reservation based on former encounters with LINUX.

To keep things simple, I've opted for the 216 minus the sleigh bells to keep it to 16 channels.

Your 216 compilation is so convincing ( start the pc and play Miditzer (without any deviation), super sound and reverb) , that I would like to ask, if there will be in some near future a 260 one.
Instead I would appreciate very much some hints for a DYS solution.

I am an online mentor who loves making electronic music and already use Puppy as my default OS - I came across this forum thread as a result of doing research into virtual organ software for Linux.
Puppy is a fantastic distro and Miditzer is a nice piece of software - FULL congratulations to the OP for all his efforts.

Hi All Linux Lovers

I have downloaded the iso, made the CD and Puppy Linux installs and runs on my spare Linux
Computer directly from the CD.

The Miditzer also runs and receives midi input which works the keys (and probably the stops) however
there is no sound. This is explained by the message I get on Miditzer startup using the console/miditzer
icon - Failed to Create the Audio Driver.

I have noted that the Yellow "M" menu button works correctly (It does NOT work at all on iMac and Debian Linux
and shows the wrong menu on The Latest Slacko Puppy Linux -- (all under wine)). Can this be made to
work - particularly on the latest Slacko Puppy. (It would be sensible to have used normal Windows Menus here
as they work properly on all Linux systems).

I am driving the Miditzer with the latest eplayWin32.exe (as yet unpublished) which works OK on all of the Linux's.
Can anyone help me get the audio driver working. I admit that my knowledge of Jack and Alsa is minimal - but
as an electronics design engineer I DO understand the fundamental principals. Is it a Jack driver or an Alsa driver
which is not created and what can I do about it?

PS. The next day.

False alarm, the sound does work - I had set up the computer to do other work which did not need
sound and had not bothered to connect any speakers and simply forgotten it had none.

Regarding the "M" menu I have noted that the version on the CD iso is .886 whereas the version which
downloads normally is .881 If this is the reason that this menu works then I urgently need an update.

The whole thing DOES work with the latest eplayWin32 but is no good running from an un-installable CD
I need to be able to install all of it on to a computer hard disk using the latest Puppy Linux.

Comments and Suggestions please.

Thanks for the link. I have now got the newer version running on Windows and like it. Particularly
the ability to use the -res parameter to set the amount of screen occupied. On a 1920X1080 monitor
(the most popular size now) with Windows and using the default resolution, the pedals get partially
covered by the black band with icons at the bottom of the screen. Also I need to make the organ
smaller so I can get eplayWin32 on the screen as well.

Moonskin appears have overcome this problem with his Puppy Linux iso. I have used your board to contact
him directly to see whether he can give me some tips to get this menu working on Linux (no response yet).

Do you have any comments on this as I suspect the new version I have just download will not work
any better in this respect than the old version. If this menu cannot be made to work under Wine then it
is a waste of time trying to use Miditzer on Linux or iMac.
