I guess I better give a report on my results with Puppy Miditzer. It is working almost perfectly. There is not any delay that I can notice. I played the Ron Reseigh Concert. It worked GREAT the computer did not have a nervous breakdown. I installed my collection of midi recordings, that members of the forum have genoursly donated. They sound very good. However my playing on the organ still does not sound very good. I have been teaching myself to play using books that I bought on the internet, they are the Pointer System. I found them to be very good. When I started I could not play two measures without getting messed up. Now I have gotten near the end of book 2, and I have made great progress. The trouble is each new song is a little more difficult.

Anyway, what are the chances that a VB application which communicates over RS232 and also makes repeated calls to an MS Access database (for the sheet music stuff) can run under WINE?

4.3.1. Serial and Parallel Ports

Serial and parallel port configuration is very similar to drive configuration - simply create a symbolic link in ~/.wine/dosdevices with the name of the device. Windows serial ports follow a naming convention of the word "com" followed by a number, such as com1, com2, etc. Similarly, parallel ports use "lpt" followed by a number, such as lpt1. You should link these directly to the corresponding Unix devices, such as /dev/ttyS0 and /dev/lp0. For example, to configure one serial port and one parallel port, run the following commands:

ln -s /dev/lp0 lpt1

I still have not been able to run the Midizter using the Puppy525 which is rather disappointing as I have been put off using Miditzer because of latency and I was hoping that your approach may have solved that issue for me. When you were referrring to the specs of the laptop as possibly being the problem, were you thinking of the amount of memory, or processor power, or the sound system (SoundMax in my case)?

Still have had no joy getting Jack to start. I am running an Evo N1020v laptop with a pentium(r) 4 Cpu 2.40GHz, 480mb ram. Hopefully the photo of my screen with the Jack error messages may assist someone to identify why Jack is not starting. I am more into music than PCs so I can make little sense of the error messages myself.

Have you used Grahams compilation and booted from the CD or have you tried to install the standard Puppy Linux?

If using Grahams compilation, is your problem on the first clean boot from the CD, or after a restart trying to save your local settings, or trying to set up a boot from USB?

Using Grahams compilation from a first boot, just wait till all hard drive activity has stopped and Miditzer is displayed, then wait another minute or two (ignore any error message, don't touch any Jack or reverb settings), press a couple of pistons to get some tabs registered, or select tabs directly for the manual you wish to try (Solo and/or Accomp) then press some notes using left click on your mouse.

Have you tried Miditzer on a computer running Windows XP?

Thanks for replying. I am running XP SP3. I am running this from a disk of Graham's ISO pack (if that is a suitable term). Jack stops and seems to prevent anything further from starting. After some fiddling about clicking on files etc I somehow got Miditzer console to display but the only things that would sound were the toy counter effects.

As it happens I am ordering a new desktop PC today and should pick it up next week. It will have 8Gb RAM so maybe I might get different results.

I just realised I didn't answer all your questions. I had the problem from the first boot from the IOS disk I made up. I was able to save the settings and the reboot was somewhat faster but the problem was the same. I get the desktop image (very nice) but Jack stops and that is where it all seemsw to come to a halt.

Thank you Charles. It will be interesting to see how things go on your new computer. I suspect it will be Windows 7 64 bit which will bring its own other issues. There should be no hardware problems though to run the Puppy Linux system (without disturbing Windows 7).
